Top Performers at Hoop Hall West

This past weekend was the annual Hoop Hall Classic West which was held at Chaparral high school. This was a loaded event with some of the top players and teams in the country. The teams who competed in it included Albany Academy (NY), Apollo HS (AZ), Chaparral HS (AZ), Christ The King High School (NY), Coronado HS (NV), Crossroads HS (CA), Gilbert HS (AZ), Hamilton Heights Christian Academy (TN), Hillcrest Prep (AZ), Liberty HS (NV), Mater Dei HS (CA), Millennium HS (AZ), Paradise Honors HS (AZ), Perry HS (AZ), Pinnacle HS (AZ), Prolific Prep (CA), Rainer Beach HS (WA), Rancho Christian HS (CA), Rancho Solano Prep (AZ), Regis Jesuit HS (CO), Shadow Mountain HS (AZ), Sierra Canyon HS (CA) and SunnySlope HS (AZ). These teams were all talented well coached groups. Below is a summary of the top and most consistent players from the weekend. There is multiple categories of top performers, others who stood out and deserve a mention and specialists who might not have been the best player on their team, but bring a specialty to the table worth noting. The players are random in each category.

Top Performers

Evan Mobley, 2020, 7’0, Rancho Christian HS (CA), USC Commit, ESPN 2020 #1 Ranked Player

Evan had a very impressive weekend in two total games in which he helped lead his team to a 2-0 record. Mobley could very likely end up being the #1 pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, is a very unique prospect. A long, lanky and athletic player who can do a little bit of everything on the floor. He’s a very skilled player offensively in which he’s a capable shooter, can attack and create off the bounce and he can create for his teammates. He has a really good feel for the game and is very effective in the open floor or half court offensively. He plays with a great pace and never gets sped up. Mobley makes good reads with the ball and is a low mistake player. He has a great motor on the glass and with his long arms and jumping ability he can dominate the boards on both ends. Is also a high IQ player who lets the game come to him. Defensively he can guard multiple positions as he is very mobile and competes. He has the ability to create steals and he alters and blocks a lot of shots with his length as he uses it to his advantage really well. Has an even keeled demeanor about him that should transfer really well to the college/pro ranks. Mobley had 16 Pts, 11 Rebounds, 3 Blocks & 22 Points, 17 Rebounds, 4 Blocks and 3 Assists in two games. The USC commit is a very dynamic and versatile player  who should continue to improve as he gets older.

Julian Strawther, 2020, 6’7, Liberty HS (NV), Gonzaga Commit, ESPN 2020 #69 ranked player

Julian had a very impressive showing in Liberty HS's single game this weekend in which they won. He set a single game Hoop Hall Classic West record with 51 Points. Strawther is a big athletic and high IQ combo guard who can do it all. He can score from all three levels and does each very efficiently as he shoots the ball from anywhere off the catch or off the bounce. Julian has a good handle which allows him to get to his spots consistently. He has a good mid range/float game and he’s a crafty finisher at the rim with either hand. He’s a high IQ player who knows how to read defenses and can create for others as well. He’s very shifty, smooth and changes speeds well in the half court or in transition in which he’s very dangerous as well. Can score out of ISO’s, pick and roll or off action which makes him very hard to guard and he’s a willing passer. He is a good rebounder for a combo guard which allows him to push immediately on the break. Defensively he’s a good defender and can guard multiple positions. He has a knack for getting steals in passing lanes and blocking shots in help-side. Julian is competitive and will do what it takes for his team to be successful as well. The Gonzaga commit will make a big  impact for them next year and has a future as a pro if he continues to stay the course.

Jalen Green, 2020, 6’5, Prolific Prep (CA), Uncommitted, ESPN 2020 #3 ranked player

Had a very impressive showing in Prolific Preps single game in which they won in convincing fashion. Could very likely end up being a top 5 pick in the 2021 NBA Draft and is a very unique prospect. A long, athletic, skilled, high IQ player who can do it all. Jalen is one of the more explosive players in the country with his unique athleticism and jumping ability. He can score at all three levels and does so consistently. He shoots the ball efficiently at all spots on the floor, on the catch or off the bounce. He has a really good mid range and pull up game when it’s available. He’s also a high level and crafty finisher at the rim with either hand. Green has good handles which allows him to be a floor general and create for himself or his teammates. He has a good understanding of the game and makes others better with his play-making ability. He is really effective out of pick and roll play and attacks defenses with good pace and patience. He changes speeds well and never gets sped up with pressure. He’s a good decision maker and understands spacing and cutting as well. He’s a high level rebounding combo guard who uses his jumping ability to his advantage. Defensively he is a good defender but can grow into a lockdown perimeter defender with his length and agility. He competes hard on both ends of the floor. He’s someone who can lead your team and plays with great poise. He had a very efficient 33 Pts & 4 Rebounds in their win. He's yet to commit to a school, but has the option to go to any school in the country and he will be a very effective collegiate and pro prospect as time goes along, and he’s continues to mature.

Jaden Hardy, 2021, 6’4, Coronado HS (NV), Uncommitted, ESPN 2021 #6 ranked player

Had a very impressive weekend for Coronado HS as he helped lead them to a 2-0 record. Jaden is one of the best players in the country regardless of class at the guard position. He’s an athletic, skilled, smart point guard who can do it all. Jaden can score at all three levels efficiently and he can really fill it up. He shoots the ball at a high level off the catch or off the bounce from three or from mid range. He’s a very crafty finisher around the rim as he can score using floaters, runners or can finish at the rim with either hand. He has great pace and changes speeds really well with the ball in his hands. Jaden does a good job reading second defenders and can make plays for his teammates off the pass as he’s a very effective passer. He’s a high IQ guard who makes the right play. He’s very shifty and explosive with the ball in his hands and does it in a smooth way. A very good rebounder for a guard as he uses his athleticism to grab rebounds. Defensively he competes hard as an on ball defender or in help-side. He does a good job playing passing lanes and can get steals/deflections. He plays with a good energy to him and is very poised on the court. He’s very dangerous in the open floor where he can make dynamic plays. Hardy had 27 Pts & 40 Points, 11 assists and 9 Rebounds in two games. Jaden currently has offers to Oregon, Texas Tech, Kentucky, Arizona, Michigan, Kansas, Michigan State and Ohio State to name a few. He’s another guy in this list and although he has more room to grow, has potential to have a pro career as well as he continues to develop down the road. 

Brandon Boston JR, 2020, 6’6, Sierra Canyon HS (CA), Kentucky Commit, ESPN 2020 #12 ranked player

Had a very impressive showing in their single game in what was in front of a sold out crowd. Brandon is another prospect within this group of guys that has a lot of upside. He’s a long, athletic, versatile and skilled player that can impact the game in many different ways. He can score at all three levels efficiently but his most lethal part of his game might be his ability to get to his spots and knock down tough shots from mid range. He can make shots over contested hands as well, which is very valuable. He can shoot off the catch or the dribble from anywhere on the court and he’s really good at creating off the bounce using his pace and change of speed. Boston has a smooth jumper and smooth feel to his game. He’s a good finisher at the rim and has good touch. He has a good pace and feel for the game overall which allows him to make smart basketball plays for himself or others. Does a good job taking what the defense gives him and never gets rushed when getting to his spots. He’s very dynamic in transition where he can use his length and athleticism. Defensively he is someone who can grow into a elite defender with his long arms and lateral ability. He’s a good rebounder for a guard and does so consistently. Has already committed to Kentucky next season and should make a big impact there and down the road he’s another guy who should have a pro career on the horizon if he continues to stay the course.

Andre Jackson, 2020, 6’6, Albany Academy (NY), Connecticut Commit, ESPN #52 ranked player

A very impressive weekend in two wins for his team. Andre is a very dynamic, athletic and skilled player that has a ton of upside. There were a ton of high level athletes in this event but Andre is up there with the best of them as his jumping ability is unique. He’s a long, athletic, skilled and smart player that can do it all on both ends of the floor. He can score at all levels but he’s most dangerous attacking off the bounce. He shoots the ball very consistently, but his ability to create off the bounce and to get into tight spaces is what makes him hard to guard. He plays with good pace and does a good job making the right reads with the ball in his hands. He’s a capable passer who can also make others better. He’s very dangerous and explosive in transition. He plays with a good motor on the glass and is a big time rebounder on both ends of the floor. Defensively with his size and length he is a very tough defender and can also grow into an elite defender due to his length and athleticism. He competes hard on both ends and doesn’t take plays off. He has that New York toughness about him which trickles down to his teammates. Andre had 26 Points and 33 Points in two games this weekend. Jackson plays with poise which is very valuable especially down the road. Andre will make a big impact at Connecticut next season and is yet another guy who has pro potential. 

DaRon Holmes, 2021, 6’9, Millennium HS (AZ), Uncommitted, Rivals #26 ranked player

Very impressive game against a super talented Sierra Canyon team. Daron is a very dynamic, unique and versatile player. He’s a long, athletic, tough, skilled and smart player that can impact the game in many different ways. Holmes can score from all three levels which is very valuable for his size. He can shoot threes off the catch or bounce and he has a very deadly mid range pull up game which is hard to stop since he can shoot over smaller defenders. Has good handles which allows him to create off the bounce so he can get to the rim and finish in which he can do so in crafty ways with either hand. Daron is a high IQ player that understands how to cut and move without the ball. He’s also a willing passer and can make others better. Holmes has a very high motor and is tough to keep off the offensive glass and can dominate the glass on the defensive end as well. He’s very dangerous in transition where he can use his length and athleticism. Defensively he’s a very good defender who can guard 1-5 which makes him very valuable. He’s a high level shot blocker that not only blocks shots, but also alters a lot of them due to his presence. Daron is also a very good leader who can bring out the best in others. His toughness also trickles down to his teammates. In the game he had 20 Points, 9 Rebounds & 4 blocks. Currently holds offers to Virginia, Texas Tech, UCLA, Arizona, Arizona State, USC, and Vanderbilt to name a few schools. Daron has shown a lot of improvement recently and is one of the hotter prospects in the country and will be a very valuable player at the collegiate level and is also another guy who has a pro future if he continues to develop. 

Devin Askew, 2020, 6’3, Mater Dei HS (CA), Kentucky Commit, ESPN #24 ranked player

Askew had a very impressive showing in his teams single game this past weekend in which they won. Devin who just reclassified to the 2020 class from the 2021, is one of the best point guards in the country. He’s an athletic, skilled, smart and tough player who can impact the game in a lot of different ways. He can score from all levels very efficiently. Askew shoots the ball at a high level off the catch or off the dribble from three or from mid range. He has a really good in between game where he uses a variety of floaters and runners. He finishes at the rim in a variety of crafty ways with either hand. Devin has a great feel for the game and plays with a pace that is way beyond his years. He’s very shifty and crafty and has a very tight handle that allows him to make tough plays look easy. Has a high IQ and sees plays develop a step ahead so that he can control games with his passing and scoring. Devin can also finish through contact. Defensively he competes hard and is a good on ball defender. He competes on both ends of the floor and really gets after it which trickles down to his teammates. He’s the true definition of a floor general. Devin also plays with a sense of toughness and tenacity which every point guard should have. Devin also plays with great poise which is very valuable for any player. He finished with 14 Points & 7 rebounds as he controlled the game from start to finish. The Kentucky commit will make a big impact for the wildcats next year and also has the ability to be in the league sooner than later. 

Michael Foster, 2021, 6’9, Hillcrest Prep (AZ), Uncommitted, ESPN #7 ranked player

The big man had a very impressive weekend for Hillcrest Prep in two games. The 2021 recruit from Milwaukee has a lot of upside and is regarded as one of the best players in the country. Foster is a long, athletic, strong, skilled and versatile prospect who can do a little bit of everything. He can score efficiently from all over the court, but he’s most dangerous attacking the rim or getting to his in between game. Foster has a very efficient pull up game and has a lot of crafty runners in his arsenal. Is very effective attacking the rim and can finish in a variety of ways around it. Michael is also really good on the block where he uses his physical strength and footwork to finish through contact. He’s very effective in transition where he can use his length and athleticism. Foster has a very good motor on the glass and is tough to keep off the offensive glass, defensively he can also control the boards as he pursues rebounds really well. Defensively he’s a versatile defender who can guard 1-5 with his size and agility, playing a big factor. He competes hard on both ends and competes with a very calm demeanor. Foster had 24 Points and 11 Points in two games for Hillcrest Prep. Foster currently has offers to Michigan, Ohio State, Kansas, Marquette, Florida, Arizona State and LSU to name a few. He’s another guy who has all the potential to play professionally. 

Nimari Burnett, 2020, 6’3, Prolific Prep (CA), Texas Tech Commit, ESPN #21 ranked player

Burnett had a very impressive weekend for Prolific Prep in their only game. Is a dynamic player who can do it all. An athletic, skilled, high IQ and tough combo guard. He can score from all three levels efficiently and shoots the ball at a high clip from three or mid range, off the catch or off the bounce. He has a really good handle which allows him to create and allows him to get to the rim where he can finish in a variety of ways. He’s very crafty around the rim and can get into tight spaces. Very shifty and changes speeds really well. He has a good feel and IQ which allows him to get to his spots off the ball where he can get open looks. Nimari is a good play-maker in the open floor and also a good passer in the half court. He plays with a toughness and tenacity which is very valuable. Defensively he competes really hard and gets after it as he doesn’t take plays off. In their one win Burnett had 13 Points and played well on both ends of the floor. The Texas Tech commit has the chance to make a big impact next season and is yet another guy who has unlimited pro potential if he continues to improve.

Samson Ruzhentsev, 2020, 6’6, Hamilton Heights (TN), Florida Commit, 4 Star prospect

Had a very impressive game in their only game played this past weekend, chalking up the win. Samson is a very unique and versatile prospect out of Russia. He can score in  many ways and does so efficiently and with good balance. He’s a very efficient shooter and what you would call a dead 3, if he gets an open look he won’t miss very many. He has a good mid range game and is very effective attacking the rim and finishing with either hand. He’s very dangerous in transition as well. He’s a crafty player that has a good pace and feel for the game. Has a high IQ and is really good cutting and moving off the ball which allows him to get to spots where he can get his shot off. Has a smooth pure stroke. Samson also has the ability to finish through contact as he has a strong body. He competes hard on both ends of the floor and is a very good defender as he has good length and size. Samson brings a sense of toughness to the floor which is very valuable. Expect him to make a big impact at Florida next season and is another prospect who will have a pro future either in the State or overseas.  

 Amari Bailey, 2022, 6’4, Sierra Canyon HS (CA), Uncommitted, ESPN #6 ranked player

Very impressive showing in their one game. Bailey is a very dynamic prospect and is one of the younger players in this field. He’s an athletic, skilled and versatile player that plays more mature then his age. He’s a combo guard who can play PG or play off the ball. He’s a capable shooter but he’s most effective attacking and creating off the bounce. He’s very athletic and can finish over bigger defenders. He’s acrobatic in the air and can also finish in a variety of crafty ways. Has a good feel for the game and plays with a really good pace as he never gets in a rush and changes speeds really good. Really good handles which allow him to get to his spots and also create for others. He’s a good and willing passer which allows him to make good reads and get teammates open looks. Amari is very effective in transition where he can use his athleticism and change of pace to convert open floor plays. Amari is a very good on ball defender and also very good in help side as he understands how to play passing lanes to create steals/deflections. He had 18 points in their one game and led them in scoring for a majority of the game. Amari currently has interest from a ton of high major programs across the country and is highly rated in his class for a reason. He has the tools and although he is still very young, but his continued growth and improvement shows he has plenty of upside.

Dalen Terry, 2020, 6’7, Hillcrest Prep (AZ), Arizona Commit, ESPN #51 ranked player

Terry had an impressive weekend for his team. Dalen is a unique prospect who can impact the game in many different ways. He’s a long, athletic, skilled and high IQ player. Dalen can score from all three levels efficiently. He can shoot the ball from three off the catch or off the bounce. The best part of Terry’s game is his mid range game and ability to create. He has a good in between game and can get to his spots and shoot over smaller defenders and also has a variety of floaters/runners. Has really good handles which allow him to make plays and he makes others better as his ability to make reads and pass might be the best part about his game. Is good in transition as well where he can find open teammates running the floor or finish himself. Terry competes on both ends of the floor and is a very good defender who creates havoc for opposing players. He gets a lot of steals and deflections and is also a very good rebounder for a point guard. He is a tough and intense player who also brings a lot of energy. Terry is aiming to make a big impact at Arizona next season.

Dominick Harris, 2020, 6’4, Rancho Christian (CA), Gonzaga Commit, ESPN #60 ranked player

A very dynamic and versatile player. Had a very impressive weekend for Rancho Christian in their two wins. He's an athletic, skilled, high IQ player who impacts the game on both ends of the floor. Can score at all three levels and is one of the better pure shooters in this class. Will drain it efficiently off the catch or off the bounce from three and he gets it off quickly too. Has a good mid range game and can also finish at the rim in a variety of ways. He’s a high IQ player who makes good reads with or without the ball and understands cutting and spacing. Good ball handling ability to make plays off the dribble where he can also make others better with his passing ability. Harris is a high level rebounder for a guard on both ends of the floor, and plays with a very high motor. Defensively he’s a great on ball defender and he really gets after it every possession. Harris is also a tough gritty player who doesn’t shy away from contact. In two games he had 25 Points and 13 Points. He could very well make a big splash at Gonzaga next season and is yet another prospect who could play pro one day.

Justus Jackson, 2021, 6’1, Millennium HS (AZ), Uncommitted,

Very impressive showing in their tilt against Sierra Canyon. Is a very intriguing player who has shown a lot of improvement as of recently. He’s an athletic, skilled, high IQ and tough player. He can score from all three levels and he shoots the ball at a very efficient and high clip from three or from mid range. He has a very good in between game where he can knock down pull ups, runners and floaters in the lane. Crafty finisher around the rim and can finish through contact. Can handle the rock with no problems and is very shifty and crafty with. He has a good feel and pace to his game and makes the right reads in order to get his teammates open looks in spots where they can score. Defensively he competes hard and can bother opposing players with his on ball defense. Justus bring toughness to the Millennium roster and he also plays with a very even keeled mentality which is very valuable at the point guard position. Logged 17 points in their one game and showed he can compete with the best. Currently he has offers to Montana, Pacific, Portland, Pepperdine and GCU to name a few, and don’t be surprised if more schools get in the mix. Jackson is a prospect on the verge of being a well known name in the Southwest and West Coast.

Ryan Myers, 2020, 6’3, Christ The King (NY), Uncommitted, 3 Star Prospect

Showed out during the weekend for Christ The King in which they finished 1-1. Myers is an athletic, strong, skilled and high IQ point guard who can impact the game in many ways. He’s a very efficient shooter off the catch or off the dribble from three or from mid range. He has the ability to make tough shots with a hand in his face as well. Good ball-handling ability which allows him to create and make plays for himself or others. Has good IQ and makes good reads on or off the ball where he can get to his spots to score or set up teammates. He is very shifty and crafty with the ball and changes speeds well. He can finish through contact. Defensively he gets after it and is a very good on ball defender. He competes hard on both ends and doesn’t take plays off. He brings that tough and gritty New York style of basketball to the court. Currently has offers to NC State, Temple, UC Riverside and has gained interest from St Louis and South Carolina recently. Myers is a prospect who is under the radar now but could really pick up steam with his hot play lately.

Shemar Morrow, 2020, 6’4, Shadow Mountain (AZ), Uncommitted,

Was on display helping his team to a 1-1 record. Is a long, athletic and skilled combo guard who can impact the game in a variety of ways. He can score at all three levels but he’s most effective attacking the rim off the bounce where he can finish at a high level. He has a very good floater game and has a variety of runners he can use as well. Morrow is an explosive athlete who is very dangerous in transition and can finish over bigger defenders or through contact. He has a good pace and feel for the game and always plays under control. Understands how to move and cut without the ball and gets to spots where he can be effective. He has a really good motor on the glass and can really eat up glass on the offensive and defensive end of the floor. Defensively he’s a versatile defender who can guard bigger guys or smaller guys and he competes hard on that side of the floor. He’s someone who can grow into a lockdown defender as well. Plays with a sense of toughness and grit too which is very valuable. His recruitment is currently floating under the radar, but is a prospect that could see college interest pick up quickly.
